ALL-NEGRO SQUAD: The Logos
Next week, to close out Black Futures Month, you’ll get your first official glimpse at the ALL-NEGRO SQUAD. I’m dropping a free four-page comic here on my feed and the RexCo and Cosmic Lion Productions feeds.
At the heart of the “All-Negro Squad” story (only inside AFROFUTURES) is the idea that 1947’s All-Negro Comics continued past its first issue. The goal is to open our story as if certain characters from All-Negro Comics (specifically, Ace Harlem and Lion Man) evolved past their 1947 debut and experienced generational shifts in the comic book industry the same way that Marvel and DC characters have for decades. In AFROFUTURES, we catch up with the O.G. Squad and their newest members during the inaugural ball of President Obama.
Late in the game, I realized that if I wanted to tell the backstory of the All-Negro Squad convincingly then I had to invite more retro comic book elements into and around the comic. I needed things that got across the 75-year lore I’m 100% making up. That meant character logos for solo comics that never existed, that meant corner boxes that mimicked the 1960s Silver Age of comics…that meant splash pages and covers for comics that never actually happened. You’ll see the final version of all these soon enough…
AFROFUTURES is available to preorder NOW!
